Kongobu-ji is the head temple of the Koyasan Shingon school of Japanese esoteric Buddhism located on Mount Koya. It functions as the principal administrative and ceremonial temple within the Mount Koya temple complex.
The temple complex includes the main hall and associated monastic buildings that serve religious, administrative and visitor functions for the Shingon order. It forms an integral part of the network of temples and pilgrimage lodgings on Mount Koya.
Kongobu-ji traces its origins to the foundation of Koyasan by the monk K4dkai (Kobo Daishi) in the early 9th century and developed over many centuries as the central institution of Shingon Buddhism. The site has been rebuilt and expanded in different historical periods to serve its religious role.
The temple is situated on Mount Koya, a mountain-top temple town in Wakayama Prefecture that is a major pilgrimage and visitor destination; Mount Koya is accessible by train and cable car from the Kansai region.

How to Get to Kongōbu-ji Temple #
Mount Kōya is accessed from Osaka by train. From Namba Station take the Nankai Koya Line express to Gokurakubashi (approx. 1 hour 20 minutes), then the cable car up to Kōyasan (5 minutes). From Kōyasan Station the Kongōbu-ji complex is a 10-20 minute walk through town; buses run but the walk passes the temple’s approach and Okuno-in.
Tips for Visiting Kongōbu-ji Temple #
- Enter via the Naka-no-in approach rather than the bus drop for quieter stone steps and mossy lanterns.
- Book a shukubo (temple lodging) in advance - the evening kaiseki and early-morning chanting are the parts that linger.
- Bring cash for the calligraphy (goshuin) stamp - the queue moves slowly and the priest writes each one by hand.
