Konevets

Konevets is an island in Lake Ladoga in Leningrad Oblast, Russia, best known as the site of the Konevsky Monastery which was founded in 1393. The island is a long-standing Orthodox pilgrimage and cultural site in the lake.

The island’s main attraction is the monastery complex itself, with historic church buildings, monastic cells and a cemetery; the ensemble dominates the shoreline and is the focus of most visits. The shoreline and wooded interior are small and compact, so sightseeing typically covers a short distance on foot.

The monastery was established in 1393 by a Novgorodian monk and developed over the medieval and modern periods as an Orthodox spiritual center. The complex suffered damage during the 20th century conflicts and Soviet period and was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church and restored from the late 20th century onward.

Konevets sits in the western part of Lake Ladoga off the Karelian Isthmus, roughly 100 km north of Saint Petersburg. The island is wooded and low-lying, with the monastery clustered on the shore and the rest of the island forming a small natural reserve.
