Komsomolskaya Square (Moscow)

Komsomolskaya Square is a transport and urban square in central Moscow dominated by three major railway terminals. It is a principal arrival and departure point for long-distance trains serving the city.

The square is best known for the three large terminal buildings that face onto it: Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky stations. Each station serves distinct long-distance corridors-northwest to Saint Petersburg, east including Trans-Siberian services, and routes to the east and southeast respectively.

The square developed in the 19th and early 20th centuries around Moscow’s main railway terminals as rail traffic expanded. Its current name reflects Soviet-era naming after the Komsomol youth organization and the area has long been reshaped to support rail and metro interchange.

It sits on the north-eastern side of central Moscow, adjacent to the Komsomolskaya metro station, roughly 3 km northeast of Red Square and the Kremlin.

• Three stations: Often called "Three Stations Square" because three major railway terminals-Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky and Kazansky-face onto the same public space.
• Public transport hub: Served directly by the Komsomolskaya metro interchange, making it one of Moscow's principal rail-to-metro transfer points.

What to See #

• Leningradsky Station: Terminates long-distance services toward Saint Petersburg and is the oldest of the three stations grouped at the square; its façade faces the square and it handles high-frequency intercity services to the northwest.
• Yaroslavsky Station: Main departure point for eastbound long-distance services, including trains that form the start of the Trans-Siberian route; the station building faces the square alongside the other terminals.
• Kazansky Station: Handles services to the east and southeast of European Russia, including routes toward the Volga region and cities such as Kazan; its distinctive building is one of the three station façades on the square.
