Komodo (island)
Island Island home to Komodo dragons and rugged landscapes
Part of Komodo National Park, Komodo Island hosts the Komodo dragon; guided treks let visitors see dragons in scrubland. Liveaboard boats, snorkeling and Pink Beach dives make it a base for marine wildlife and underwater exploration.
Komodo (island) is one of the principal islands in Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, and is internationally known as a stronghold of the Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). The island and park are protected for their unique terrestrial and marine biodiversity and form part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Guided treks to see wild Komodo dragons in their natural habitat and snorkeling around coastal reefs and bays; the island also features the locally famous Pink Beach with its distinctive sand color and good shallow-water snorkeling. Boat trips combine dragon-spotting, short hikes, and marine activities across nearby islets.
Komodo National Park was established to protect the dragons and surrounding marine ecosystems; the islands have a long human history of small-scale local settlement and more recent conservation and tourism management. The park was later inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Man and Biosphere Reserve to recognise its ecological value.
The island lies in the Flores Sea within Komodo National Park, northwest of Flores and close to the town of Labuan Bajo on Flores, which is the main gateway for visitors to the park.
- How to visit: Access is typically via boat from Labuan Bajo on Flores; visits to see dragons are carried out with park rangers for safety and conservation reasons.
What to See #
- Komodo dragon habitat: Dry coastal and scrubland areas where the Komodo dragon lives and can be observed from guided trails and viewing platforms; trekking is the usual way to encounter dragons under ranger supervision.
- Pink Beach (Pantai Merah): A well-known crescent beach on the island notable for its pale pink sand and good snorkeling directly offshore with coral and reef fish.
How to Get to Komodo (island) #
Komodo Island is reached by boat from Labuan Bajo (Flores), the main gateway town on the west tip of Flores. Fly into Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport) from Bali or other Indonesian hubs, then take a public ferry or speedboat from Labuan Bajo harbor to Komodo Island; boat crossings commonly take around 1-2 hours depending on vessel and sea conditions. There are no roads connecting Komodo to Flores, so all access is by boat or organized liveaboard.
Most boats land at a small jetty and the island’s attractions are within short walking distance from landing points; tours and boat transfers are organized from Labuan Bajo’s harbor.
Tips for Visiting Komodo (island) #
- Use Labuan Bajo as your launching point and book morning visits to Komodo Island - ranger-guided walks are mandatory on Komodo and morning treks often find dragons more active before the heat of day.
- Start your island visit at Loh Liang (the main ranger post/visitor area) to complete the required briefing and avoid the confusion of multiple small landing sites; rangers enforce guided routes for safety and conservation.
- If you have time, combine the dragon trek with nearby stops (Pink Beach, local snorkeling sites) on the same boat trip-many day visitors only see dragons and miss excellent snorkeling and beaches close by.
