Kom El Deka
Archaeological Site Archaeological district of ancient Alexandria with Roman ruins
Archaeological quarter in Alexandria with Roman-era remains: a small theater, baths and mosaic fragments; visited for classical archaeology and guided excavations.
Kom El Deka is an archaeological complex in central Alexandria, Egypt, containing Roman- and Byzantine-period urban remains and public buildings. The site preserves a mix of entertainment, domestic and service structures uncovered in twentieth- and twenty-first-century excavations.
The excavated highlights include a late Roman theatre complex with an attached odeon, clusters of town houses with mosaic floors, and a suite of public bathing and service buildings. The footprint of the site is compact, allowing visitors to see multiple building types and artefact-bearing contexts in a short walk.
Excavations and conservation at Kom El Deka took place mainly in the twentieth century and have continued episodically; finds span the Roman through Byzantine periods and show continuous urban use and adaptation. The site illustrates transitions in Alexandria’s urban fabric rather than a single monumental phase.
Kom El Deka sits within the historic central district of modern Alexandria, close to the city’s coastal urban area. It is accessible from central Alexandria and lies among later layers of the modern city.
- Period of occupation: The visible remains on the surface relate mainly to Roman and Byzantine occupation from roughly the 1st through the 7th centuries AD.
- Compact urban site: Excavations have revealed both public buildings and domestic quarters in a relatively small archaeological park within central Alexandria, making it useful for studying urban life in late antiquity.
What to See #
- Roman theatre / Odeon: A compact late Roman- and Byzantine-period theatre complex uncovered within the site, including a small covered odeon used for music and performances and open-air seating areas dating to the Roman period.
- Residential quarter (Roman houses): Clusters of domestic buildings and town houses with preserved mosaic pavements, courtyards and service rooms that illustrate urban life in Alexandria from the Roman into the Byzantine era.
- Bath complex and service structures: Remains of public bathing and service buildings from the late Roman period that form part of the excavated urban neighbourhood and help date the site's main phases of occupation.
Tips for Visiting Kom El Deka #
- Visit Kom el‑Dikka first thing in the morning on a weekday to avoid Alexandria's heat and to see the Roman amphitheatre and mosaic floors before tour groups arrive.
- Allow time to study the site's mosaics and small bath/house complexes-these lower‑profile archaeological features are the most visually rewarding but are often passed by quickly.
- Combine this visit with a short walk along the Corniche or a stop at the nearby Alexandria National Museum to place the ruins in the city's wider historical context and spread out your sightseeing to avoid peak crowds.
