Koldinghus is a former royal castle located in the centre of Kolding in Southern Denmark, dating in origin to the late 13th century and today functioning as a historic site and museum.
The site combines restored medieval and later structures with visible ruins; visitors come for the castle architecture, museum displays of historical interiors and applied arts, and views over Kolding Fjord from the ramparts.
The castle was built as a royal fortress and residence in the medieval period, suffered a major fire in 1808 and underwent restoration and conservation work from the 19th century into the 20th century to stabilise ruins and rebuild sections for museum use.
It occupies a hill in central Kolding overlooking the inner reaches of Kolding Fjord in the Region of Southern Denmark.
