Koh Ker
Archaeological Site Remote ancient Khmer temple complex and former capital
Koh Ker stands as the remote 10th‑century Khmer capital with Prasat Thom’s stepped pyramid and scattered temples; visitors arrive for the unusual pyramid form and the site’s seclusion.
Koh Ker is a remote Angkor-period archaeological site in Preah Vihear province, Cambodia, notable for a cluster of 10th-century temples and a distinctive stepped pyramid (Prasat Thom). It served briefly as a royal center when the Khmer capital was moved here in the early 10th century.
The complex contains scattered brick and sandstone monuments, carved lintels, and the large stepped pyramid that dominates the skyline; visitors explore individual temple sites set among woodland and scrub. The site is popular with travelers seeking less-crowded Angkorian monuments and wide views from the plateau.
Koh Ker rose to prominence when a Khmer king established a capital there in the early 10th century; many temples date to that period and to subsequent Angkor-era construction phases. Over time the site was abandoned and fell into ruin until archaeological work and conservation began in the 20th century.
Koh Ker is located on a forested plateau in Preah Vihear province in northern Cambodia, set well away from Siem Reap and accessed by a long rural road; it lies to the northeast of the main Angkor complex.
- Facilities: Remote site with limited visitor facilities - allow time for travel and bring water and insect repellent.
- Visiting conditions: The main pyramid and many ruined temples stand in a largely forested, sparsely visited area, so visits are often quiet compared with Angkor.
What to See #
- Prasat Thom: A stepped pyramid-style temple on a forested plateau, notable for its multi-tiered form and panoramic views over the surrounding lowlands. It is the focal monument of the Koh Ker complex.
How to Get to Koh Ker #
Koh Ker is in Preah Vihear province and is most easily reached by road from Siem Reap. Expect a 2-3 hour drive (roughly 100-150 km depending on route) heading north/east from Siem Reap on Route 6 and then onto provincial roads; public transport is limited so most visitors use a private car, taxi or organized tour. There is parking at the archaeological site and a short walk from the parking area to the main temple structures.
Tips for Visiting Koh Ker #
- Plan for an early start and aim to climb the Prasat Thom pyramid at sunrise or late afternoon for cooler temperatures, dramatic light and far fewer people than the midday heat.
- Because Koh Ker is remote, arrange a 4x4 transfer from Siem Reap or stay overnight in the nearby village to make sunrise/sunset visits practical; road conditions can be rough and timings longer than maps suggest.
- Give yourself time to explore away from the main pyramid - smaller forested temple groups and isolated prasats are easy to miss but well worth the walk.
Best Time to Visit Koh Ker #
Koh Ker is easiest and most pleasant to explore during the dry, cooler months (November-February) when access and walking conditions are best.
