Kōfuku-ji is a major Buddhist temple complex in Nara city, Nara Prefecture, Japan, originally established in the 7th century and long associated with the powerful Fujiwara family. The complex is one of Nara’s principal historic temples and contains several important buildings and cultural treasures.

Key features include the temple’s landmark five-story pagoda and museum collections of Buddhist sculptures and relics; many structures and objects are designated as National Treasures. The site receives large numbers of visitors who combine a visit with nearby Nara Park and other historic monuments.

Kōfuku-ji was founded in the Asuka period and moved to Nara when the capital shifted; over centuries the temple complex underwent periods of expansion, loss by fire and successive reconstructions, producing the present collection of historic buildings and preserved artifacts.

The temple sits in central Nara, adjacent to Nara Park and within easy walking distance of other UNESCO-listed sites such as Tōdai-ji; it is readily accessible from Nara’s station and forms part of the city’s compact historic district.

  • World Heritage and National Treasures: Part of the UNESCO World Heritage group 'Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara', with several temple buildings and artifacts designated as National Treasures of Japan.
  • Founding era: Founded in the 7th century as a family temple of the Fujiwara clan, it has been rebuilt repeatedly over centuries and remains a central historic site in Nara.
