Kneiss

The Kneiss are a small group of low-lying islands, shoals and tidal flats off the coast of Sfax in the Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia. The feature is notable for its shallow lagoons and intertidal habitats rather than for elevation or built structures.

The area supports traditional fisheries and provides feeding and nesting habitat for coastal birds due to its mudflats, channels and vegetated islets. Human use is primarily fishing and small-scale coastal activities rather than large-scale tourism.

The islands have been formed and maintained by sedimentation in the Gulf of Gabes and are seasonally exposed and submerged by tidal action, which shapes the local ecology and navigation channels. Over time they have remained important local fishing grounds and bird habitat.

Geographically the Kneiss group lies off the western shore of the Gulf of Gabes near the city of Sfax, within Sfax Governorate, and is reached by small boats from the Tunisian mainland.

• Access: Most access is by boat from the Sfax area; the islands are best visited with a local skipper familiar with shifting shoals.
