Kizilgaha Caves
Archaeological Site Silk Road-era Buddhist cave complex with murals
Along Xinjiang’s Silk Road corridor, the Kizilgaha Caves contain rock-cut chambers and Buddhist murals; archaeologists and visitors come for early Silk Road art and history.
The Kizilgaha Caves are a group of rock-cut Buddhist caves near Kucha in Xinjiang, China, containing extensive mural paintings dating roughly from the 5th to 8th centuries CE. They form part of the early Buddhist artistic heritage along the northern Silk Road.
The cave murals include narrative scenes, donor portraits and figures of the Buddha rendered in styles that mix Indian, Persian and Central Asian influences. The site is important for the study of early medieval Silk Road art and cross-cultural exchange.
The caves were carved and decorated by local Buddhist communities during the early medieval period and later fell into disuse; many paintings have suffered from weathering and damage over time. The complex sits on the arid northern edge of the Taklamakan basin in the vicinity of Kucha, Xinjiang.
- Murals and date range: Wall paintings in the caves date roughly from the early medieval period and show scenes from Buddhist tradition and donor portraits in Central Asian dress.
