Kizil Caves
Archaeological Site Ancient Buddhist cave complex in Xinjiang
Near Kucha in Xinjiang, the Kizil Caves are an extensive Buddhist rock-cut complex with wall paintings and carvings dating to the first millennium-of interest to Silk Road history and mural art specialists.
The Kizil Caves, also known as the Kizil Grottoes, are an extensive series of rock-cut Buddhist caves in Xinjiang, China, famous for their early murals and sculptures created along the northern Silk Road.
Visitors see cliff-face grottoes with painted murals, carved stucco and remains of monastic architecture that document Buddhist art and iconography from approximately the 3rd to 8th centuries CE. Many caves contain narrative scenes and donor portraits that reflect artistic influences from across Central and South Asia.
The caves were developed by local Buddhist communities and pilgrims between the early medieval centuries and served as monastic and devotional sites tied to Silk Road cultural exchange. In the 20th century many wall paintings and artifacts were removed to museums for conservation; the grottoes remain an important archaeological and heritage site.
The complex lies in the region historically known as Kucha on the northern rim of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, accessible from regional centres to the west and serving historically as a Silk Road stop.
- Cave murals and date range: The site contains hundreds of cliff-cut caves with Buddhist murals dating mainly to the 3rd-8th centuries CE, representing important early Silk Road Buddhist art.
