Kitulo National Park

Kitulo National Park is a protected area in southern Tanzania’s highlands, established in 2005 to conserve montane grassland ecosystems and their floral diversity. It covers high-elevation plateaus known for extensive wildflower displays and a high number of endemic plant species.

The park’s main attraction is seasonal floral displays across montane meadows and grasslands, including large numbers of orchids and other alpine species that bloom after rains. Trails and viewpoints across the plateau give access to the flower-rich areas at walking distance.

The park was created to protect these montane habitats from agricultural conversion and to support scientific study of the region’s specialized flora. Management focuses on habitat protection, research, and limited visitor access to minimise disturbance.

Kitulo sits in the Mbeya Region of southern Tanzania on high plateaus in the Southern Highlands; the landscape is upland grassland and heath interrupted by ridges and valley forests, with the nearest regional centres reached by rural roads.
