Kition

Kition is the archaeological site of an ancient city-kingdom located on the site of modern Larnaca in Cyprus, known for its Phoenician foundations and multi-period occupation. The site preserves remains from Bronze Age through Phoenician, Hellenistic and Roman periods and is one of the island’s important urban archaeological locations.

Visitors to the site can see exposed foundations, city-wall traces and temple precincts uncovered by archaeological work, as well as displays and contextual signage at the on-site areas. The ruins sit close to the modern coastline and are often visited in conjunction with other Larnaca cultural attractions.

Historically Kition functioned as a coastal city and trading centre with documented Phoenician settlement phases and later Greek and Roman occupation, evolving over centuries with successive building phases. Excavations in the 20th and 21st centuries have revealed temples, necropoleis and urban structures that illustrate its long-term urban history.

The site lies within the Larnaca District near the town’s seafront and harbour area, a short walk from the modern town centre and the Larnaca Salt Lake, providing easy access for day visitors and archaeologically minded travellers.
