South Tarawa & Central Gilberts (urban atolls)

May marks the transition to the drier season when steady southeast trade winds arrive and humidity falls noticeably - afternoons feel breezier and the baking midday heat is easier to tolerate. Sea clarity in the lagoon improves, which is good for snorkeling and boat trips around the central atolls; local guesthouses on Bonriki and nearby islets fill with people moving for work. Expect smoother small‑plane connections but keep a light windbreaker for the cooler mornings.

Northern Gilberts (Butaritari, Makin and surrounding islets)

A steadier southeast trade wind arrives in May and the northern Gilberts begin to feel drier and more comfortable; afternoons have a steady breeze and the mosquitos drop in number. This is a better window for long beach walks and for accessing remote villages, and sea transfers tend to be more reliable. Light layers for evenings are helpful, and reef snorkelling is enjoyable with generally clearer water.

Phoenix Islands (Canton, Nikumaroro and the protected area)

May begins the drier trade‑wind period with more stable days and better sea conditions for reaching remote atolls; water clarity improves markedly which benefits snorkeling and shallow‑reef dives. Boat operators start planning more regular trips and the navigation between islets becomes safer, though the crossings are still long. Expect basic accommodations and come prepared with essentials - there are no shops beyond temporary research stations.

Line Islands (Kiritimati/Christmas, Tabuaeran/Fanning, Teraina/Washington)

May brings the southeast trade winds and with them a distinct drop in humidity and fewer heavy showers, making outdoor exploration on Tabuaeran and Kiritimati much more comfortable. The improved sea clarity is excellent for snorkelling and surf spots start to settle into predictable patterns, which benefits local outfitters. Since flights are still limited, book early and plan to stay several days to accommodate transport windows.
