South Tarawa & Central Gilberts (urban atolls)
March continues the wet spell with frequent thunderstorms and high humidity that makes walking between markets uncomfortable in the middle of the day. This is when groundwater and tanks are often replenished, but also when coastal erosion and minor inundation from high tides are more visible along Betio’s waterfront. Travellers should pack light, quick‑dry clothing and insect repellent; museum visits and indoor cultural events are pleasant escapes from sudden squalls.
Northern Gilberts (Butaritari, Makin and surrounding islets)
By March the northern atolls still see heavy rains, but there are regular clear spells that turn the palms glossy and the surf lines active - a good time for photographers who don’t mind wet gear. The ocean can be rougher, and small aircraft or charter boats to and from Tarawa sometimes run late; keep flexibility in itineraries. Cultural gatherings often shift indoors when showers appear, offering travelers a chance to experience song and dance away from the heat.
Phoenix Islands (Canton, Nikumaroro and the protected area)
March continues with variable wet conditions; storms can be intense and short, and the wind can shift rapidly making small‑boat work hazardous. Visibility around reefs can suffer after heavy rains, but nutrient pulses sometimes draw larger fish close to the surface - sightings of tuna and large pelagics are possible from liveaboard vessels. Travelers should have flexible itineraries and contingency days for sea transit.
Line Islands (Kiritimati/Christmas, Tabuaeran/Fanning, Teraina/Washington)
By March persistent showers still fall but there are frequent breaks that reveal blazing lagoon colours, especially on Kiritimati’s western flats where kingfishers and terns gather. Teraina’s freshwater swamp is at its fullest, which is excellent for birdwatching though mosquitoes are at peak annoyance - plan indoor evenings with treated nets. Transport remains the main constraint; charter boats and local flights are often scheduled around short calm windows.
