Mountain Highest peak of South Sudan's Imatong Mountains

Mount Kinyeti crowns the Imatong Mountains in eastern South Sudan and draws hikers to montane forest, endemic plants and ridge views; trekking here requires local guides and logistical planning.

Main image

Kinyeti is the highest mountain peak in South Sudan, forming the principal summit of the Imatong Mountains. It is notable for its elevation and for supporting montane habitats that differ from surrounding lowlands.

The peak and its slopes host distinct vegetation and cooler, wetter conditions relative to the surrounding plains, and the range has been important for local water catchment and biodiversity. Access to the mountain is from towns in Eastern Equatoria and is often undertaken by experienced guides due to remoteness and rough terrain.

Kinyeti sits in Eastern Equatoria near the Imatong range and is the dominant topographic feature of the area, visible from surrounding lowland areas.

  • Height: At about 3,187 metres it is the highest point in South Sudan and a prominent feature of the Imatong Mountains.
