How to Get to Kinigi
Kinigi is the gateway settlement for Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda's Northern Province; virtually all international travellers arrive via Kigali International Airport (KGL) and continue by road. Public buses, organised shuttles and private transfers serve the Musanze/Kinigi corridor.
Kigali International Airport (KGL): The main international gateway for northern Rwanda. From Kigali you can arrange a private transfer or shared safari shuttle to Kinigi (Musanze/Volcanoes area) - road travel time is typically 2-3 hours depending on stops and traffic. Private transfers from the airport to Kinigi are common for park visitors.
Local airfields / charters: There are no regular scheduled flights into Musanze/Kinigi; small charter flights exist in limited cases but Kigali remains the practical arrival point for most visitors.
Train: Rwanda currently has no passenger rail services.
Bus: Public buses and minivans (matatus/minibuses) run from Kigali’s Nyabugogo bus station to Musanze (Ruhengeri) in the Northern Province; journey time is around 2-3 hours and fares are typically a few thousand Rwandan francs (low single‑digit USD equivalent). From Musanze town you can take a short taxi or moto (motorcycle taxi) to Kinigi and the entrances to Volcanoes National Park (10-30 minutes). Tour operators also run scheduled shuttles from Kigali directly to Kinigi for park visitors.

Kinigi is a small gateway village for Volcanoes National Park and is best reached by car or organised transfer from Musanze (Ruhengeri) or Kigali. Local transport options include minibuses and taxis, but schedules are limited; many visitors arrive with tour operators. Around the village and lodge areas walking is straightforward; rougher rural roads mean a 4x4 can be useful for some nearby trails and viewpoints.
