King Michael I Park is the large public park in northern Bucharest that was renamed from Herăstrău Park in 2017. It is the city’s main urban green space and includes the lakeshore, formal paths and cultural attractions.
Major visitor draws are the lakeside promenades, boating on Lake Herăstrău and the on-site Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum, an open-air ethnographic museum displaying traditional Romanian rural buildings. The park covers roughly 187 hectares and hosts seasonal events, walking and cycling paths and recreational facilities.
The park originated as a planned urban green space in the 20th century and developed around the artificial lake and surrounding leisure facilities. The Village Museum was established in the interwar period and later expanded; the park’s current layout reflects successive urban developments and restoration works.
The park lies in northern Bucharest adjacent to the Arișoara and Herăstrău neighborhoods in Sector 1. It is accessible from multiple city tram and bus routes and is close to the business and diplomatic districts of the city.
- Village Museum: The park contains the open-air Village Museum showcasing traditional Romanian rural architecture and crafts.
- Recreation: Boat rentals and lakeside promenades are concentrated on the Herăstrău lake shore and are busiest in late spring and summer.
