The Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum is an open-air ethnographic museum on the northern edge of Bucharest that displays traditional Romanian village buildings and cultural artefacts. It was founded in 1936 and is one of the earliest and largest open-air museums in Europe.

Buildings such as peasant houses, wooden churches, windmills and farm outbuildings have been relocated and reassembled to represent regional rural life. The museum is organized by historic regions and presents vernacular architecture, interiors and craft demonstrations.

The museum was established as an academic and cultural initiative to preserve Romania’s rural architectural heritage and is used for education, research and public display.

It is located in Bucharest’s northern park area (near Herăstrău / King Michael I Park), accessible from the city center by public transport.

The museum is a 15-20 minute drive north from central Bucharest on Șoseaua Kiseleff. Take bus lines and occasional direct trams that stop near the museum’s entrance; taxis and rideshares are convenient from central Bucharest.

• Enter via the main gate at Șoseaua Kiseleff 28-30 to follow the suggested circuit through the village settlements.
• Visit on Sundays for folk demonstrations and artisans working traditional crafts-these events are often scheduled and make the exhibits come alive.
• Don't skip the wooden churches section; the carpentry and joinery techniques are instructive and photogenic.
