Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary
National Park Riverine wildlife sanctuary protecting Borneo rainforest and wildlife
Along Sabah’s Kinabatangan River, the wildlife sanctuary is known for river safaris to see proboscis monkeys, orangutans, pygmy elephants and rich birdlife; lodges organize dawn and night cruises focused on wildlife viewing.
Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary protects stretches of lowland forest and wetlands along the lower Kinabatangan River in eastern Sabah and functions as an important wildlife corridor in a heavily modified landscape. The area is notable for high concentrations of Bornean species in a relatively small area of remaining forest.
Key wildlife includes proboscis monkeys, Bornean orangutans, pygmy elephants, crocodiles and a rich assemblage of hornbills and waterbirds; sightings are concentrated along the river and oxbow lakes. Wildlife viewing is dominated by boat-based safaris from riverside lodges and guided walks at forest patches.
Conservation efforts have focused on protecting remaining riparian forest fragments and restoring connectivity; the sanctuary complements other protected areas and community-managed lands along the river. Management and visitor infrastructure are centred on small lodges and village-based operations.
The sanctuary occupies the lower Kinabatangan floodplain east of Sandakan on Sabah’s east coast; access for most visitors is by road from Sandakan followed by transfers to lodge piers on the river.
- Best viewing times: Best wildlife sightings are typically at dawn and dusk when riverbank species such as proboscis monkeys and hornbills are most active.
- How to see wildlife: River safaris from lodge bases are the primary way to see large mammals and birds; guided walks are used for forest interior sightings and night excursions.
What to See #
- Sukau: A riverside village that functions as the principal base for wildlife-viewing lodges and organised river safaris along the Kinabatangan floodplain.
- River floodplain and oxbow lakes: The river floodplain and oxbow-lake systems that form the sanctuary's core habitat, where lowland rainforest meets seasonal wetlands and provides concentrated wildlife viewing.

Most visitors reach the Kinabatangan from Sandakan (Sandakan Airport, SDK). From Sandakan it is roughly a 2-3 hour drive east to the Sukau/Bilit area; many lodges arrange transfers. Alternatively, drivers travel from Lahad Datu or Kinabatangan’s nearest towns; river cruises depart from lodge jetties in Sukau.
Tips for Visiting Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary #
- Book a river cruise that visits the oxbow lakes and palm swamps at dawn or dusk when wildlife sightings peak.
- Stay in Sukau rather than Sandakan for earlier boat departures and longer river time; many lodges coordinate pick-ups from Sandakan.
