Kilwa Kisiwani is an island off the southern Tanzanian coast that preserves the ruins of a medieval Swahili trading city and its associated stone architecture. The site reflects Kilwa’s role as a major Indian Ocean entrepôt during the medieval period.
Archaeological remains include coral-stone mosques, palaces and fortifications such as a large mosque complex, the coastal fort and the palace known as Husuni Kubwa. These standing ruins illustrate the city’s wealth and connections across the Indian Ocean trade network.
Kilwa reached its height between the 13th and 16th centuries as part of the Kilwa Sultanate and declined after Portuguese incursions and changing trade patterns. Excavations and conservation work have exposed the plan of the city and its monumental buildings.
The island lies off the Lindi Region coast of Tanzania and is accessed by boat from the mainland town of Kilwa Masoko.
