How to Get to Kilindoni
Kilindoni is the main town on Mafia Island and is reached by short domestic flights from Dar es Salaam or by sea. Domestic flights into Mafia Island Airport are the quickest and most reliable way to arrive; ferries are available but timetables change seasonally.
Mafia Island Airport (MFA): Kilindoni is served by Mafia Island Airport, with scheduled domestic flights from Dar es Salaam (Julius Nyerere International, DAR) operated by small domestic carriers. Flight time from Dar is short (about 20-30 minutes); on arrival in Kilindoni you are a short drive from town.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR): Dar es Salaam is the main international gateway. From Dar you can either take a domestic flight to Mafia Island (MFA) or continue by sea (passenger ferries/boats) to Kilindoni; sea crossings take several hours.
Train: There is no rail service to Kilindoni or Mafia Island. Rail travel in Tanzania focuses on mainland routes and does not serve islands.
Bus / Ferry: From Dar es Salaam travellers can take a ferry or boat to Kilindoni - schedule and operators vary (passenger ferries and private boats). On the mainland, buses and dala-dalas serve routes to ports where boats to Mafia depart; check current local schedules as services are irregular.
How to Get Around Kilindoni #
Kilindoni (Mafia Island) has a very walkable village centre; many visitors get around on foot between the harbour, lodges and beaches. Motorcycle taxis (boda-boda) are the common paid option for longer trips and there are local taxis and bicycle hires too. Boats are the way to reach other islands or the mainland; short land rides are cheap (a few thousand Tanzanian shillings) - bring cash and agree prices beforehand.
