Kihnu

Kihnu is a small inhabited island in the Gulf of Riga, part of Pärnumaa in southwestern Estonia, known for its distinct island culture and traditional way of life. The island’s cultural practices have international recognition for their continuity and community role.

On the island you will find traditional wooden houses, local handicrafts, folk costumes, and seasonal community events; there is a small local museum and basic visitor facilities in the main villages. Beaches and a simple rural landscape are typical; travel is low-key and most services are seasonal.

Kihnu’s culture developed around fishing, seafaring and small-scale agriculture; local traditions have been preserved through family and community institutions. In recent decades the community has promoted cultural heritage through local museums and festivals.

Geographically Kihnu lies in the Gulf of Riga off Estonia’s west coast and is administratively part of Pärnumaa. It is reached by regular ferry services from the Estonian mainland during the warmer months and by smaller boats in other seasons.
