The K’iche’ kingdom of Q’umarkaj, often called Q’umarkaj or Utatlán, is the ruins of the pre-Columbian capital of the K’iche’ Maya in present-day El Quiché Department, Guatemala. It was a major political and ceremonial center in the Late Postclassic period prior to the Spanish conquest.
Surviving remains include pyramid-platforms, plazas and a ballcourt, arranged around a central ceremonial core. The site provides evidence of the K’iche’ polity’s urban and ritual layout.
Q’umarkaj served as the K’iche’ kingdom’s capital until the early 16th century and fell to Spanish forces in 1524 during the conquest led by Pedro de Alvarado. Since then it has functioned as an archaeological site and tourist attraction.
Geographically it is located inland in Guatemala’s western highlands, near the modern town of Santa Cruz del Quiché, set on a plateau above surrounding valleys.
