Kibara Mountains
Mountains Mountain range in southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo
Remote highlands in Haut-Katanga known to geologists for tin and other mineral deposits; the area also supports montane forests, scattered farming communities and rugged terrain.
The Kibara Mountains are a mountain range in Haut-Katanga Province in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They are geologically significant as part of the Mesoproterozoic Kibaran Belt.
The range is notable for its exposed metamorphic and igneous rock and for areas of mineralisation rather than for developed tourist facilities. Fieldwork and mineral exploration occur in parts of the range; public recreational infrastructure is limited.
The mountains formed during the Kibaran orogenic events in the Mesoproterozoic and have since been subject to geological study and mineral exploration. Colonial and postcolonial geological surveys documented tin and associated minerals that attracted prospecting activity.
The range lies in southeastern DRC within Haut-Katanga Province. It occupies inland high ground in a region characterized by a mix of plateau and undulating terrain.
- Geology and minerals: Part of a broader Mesoproterozoic orogenic system known as the Kibaran Belt, which hosts numerous pegmatite and hydrothermal mineral occurrences.
- Mineralisation: Contains known deposits of tin and associated rare-metal minerals that have been the focus of exploration and small-scale mining.
