Khustain Nuruu National Park is a protected steppe and forest reserve in central Mongolia noted for its role in wildlife restoration and habitat conservation. The park is administered from Ulaanbaatar region and sits on rolling steppe and low hills.

Key attractions are guided wildlife drives to see herds of Przewalski’s horse (takhi) reintroduced to the wild, plus birdlife and grazing ungulates across open steppe and riverine willow stands. Walks and short drives through the park’s valleys provide chances to see the horses at fairly close range under controlled viewing arrangements.

The area was designated and managed for species recovery and habitat protection in the late 20th century, becoming internationally noted for captive-breeding releases and ongoing monitoring programs. Management has focused on maintaining grazing habitat and limiting disturbance to reintroduced populations.

Khustain Nuruu lies roughly 100 km west of Ulaanbaatar amid rolling steppe and low wooded hills; access is by road from the capital and from nearby towns, with visitor facilities concentrated near the park entrance and research areas.

  • Wildlife viewing: Known as one of the primary sites in Mongolia for the reintroduction of the Przewalski's horse; sightings are most likely in spring and autumn when animals move to open grazing areas.

What to See #

  • Takhi reintroduction zone: A core conservation area where reintroduced Przewalski's horses (takhi) are monitored in semi-wild conditions and visible on guided drives and timed viewing routes.
  • Visitor and interpretation area: A visitor center and small network of marked routes offering guided wildlife viewing and interpretive material about the reserve's restoration work.

Tips for Visiting Khustain Nuruu National Park #

  • Plan wildlife viewing for early morning or late afternoon when Przewalski's horses (takhi) are most active-these are the prime times for sightings and photography.
  • Book an authorized park guide or ranger-led tour rather than going alone; guides know where herds are spending the season and how to view them responsibly without disturbing the animals.
