Khüiten Peak
Mountain Highest peak of Mongolia in the Altai range.
Khüiten Peak crowns Mongolia’s Altai range as the country’s highest mountain; climbers and trekkers attempt glaciated routes and visit Kazakh communities on the border.
Khüiten Peak is the highest point in Mongolia, located on the Tavan Bogd massif in Bayan-Ölgii Province near the international frontier in the Altai Mountains. The peak rises to about 4,374 metres and is glaciated year-round.
Climbers and trekkers come for the high-altitude alpine terrain and glacier travel rather than built attractions; routes involve glacier crossings and remote approach logistics. The massif includes several high summits and glacial features that concentrate mountaineering interest in the region.
The peak and surrounding Tavan Bogd group are composed of igneous and metamorphic rocks shaped by alpine glaciation; traditional Mongolian and Kazakh herding activities occur in the valleys, while mountaineering activity has increased since the late 20th century. Access and climbing require permits and logistical arrangements through local operators in Bayan-Ölgii.
Khüiten Peak is in Mongolia’s far west, within the Tavan Bogd area of the Altai range in Bayan-Ölgii Province, close to Mongolia’s borders with China and Russia. The area is remote; the provincial capital Ölgii is the usual starting point for expeditions into the massif.
- Elevation: Mongolia's highest mountain at about 4,374 metres, frequently listed as the country's summit for mountaineers.
What to See #
- Khüiten Peak summit: The summit of the Tavan Bogd massif and the highest point of Mongolia, reaching roughly 4,374 metres above sea level and capped by permanent ice and snow.
- Potanin Glacier (Tavan Bogd massif): Potanin Glacier lies on the slopes of the Tavan Bogd massif and is the largest glacier in Mongolia, feeding meltwater into valley streams around the base of the peaks.
How to Get to Khüiten Peak #
Khüiten Peak (in the Altai Tavan Bogd area) is very remote. Typical access is to fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii (Ölgii airport) and from Ölgii join an organized expedition - travel to the massif is by 4x4 and multi‑day trekking/horseback; there are no regular public‑transport services to the high‑mountain base. If you plan a visit, arrange local guides, vehicles and permits in Ölgii in advance.
Tips for Visiting Khüiten Peak #
- Plan travel for the high season (mid‑June to early September) when trails and access routes are snow‑free; weather is highly changeable so allow extra days for acclimatization and itinerary flexibility.
- Arrange a local, licensed guide and logistics (4x4 transport, pack animals or horses) through an Ulaanbaatar or Ölgii operator-approaches and permits are remote and commonly handled by experienced agencies.
- Treat it as a multi‑day expedition: prioritize gradual ascent and acclimatization, and confirm park access or permits with your operator rather than attempting independent border or glacier approaches.
