Kanas Lake

Kanas Lake is a glacially formed alpine lake in the Kanas Nature Reserve of northern Xinjiang, China, noted for clear water and scenic mountain surroundings. It is a focal point within a larger protected valley known for dramatic seasonal scenery.

Scenic viewpoints around the lake, boat excursions and forested trails are the main draws; the area is particularly popular in autumn when foliage and lake colours become vivid. Photography, short hikes and cultural visits to nearby villages are common activities.

The lake and valley are the product of glacial and fluvial processes and have been settled by local ethnic groups for centuries; in modern times the area has been managed as a nature reserve to protect its landscapes and biodiversity.

Positioned in Xinjiang’s northern Altay region near international borders with Mongolia and Russia, the lake sits within a remote mountainous area of Burqin County and is accessed via regional roads and tourism routes.
