Khotyn Fortress

Khotyn Fortress is a large medieval stone stronghold on the right bank of the Dniester River in Chernivtsi Oblast, near the town of Khotyn. It is notable for its preserved walls, towers and hilltop position overlooking the river.

Extensive curtain walls, bastions and internal courtyards; visitors commonly walk sections of the ramparts and use designated paths to explore the complex. The location gives commanding views down the Dniester gorge and across to the opposite bank.

Construction and major rebuilding took place in the medieval period under regional powers; the fortress was strategically important and saw major engagements, including the well-known 1621 battle between Polish-Lithuanian forces and the Ottoman Empire. Control of the fortress changed between regional states over the centuries.

Khotyn sits directly on the Dniester River near Ukraine’s border with Romania, with the modern town at the fortress’s base and transport links to regional centres in Chernivtsi Oblast.

• Best viewpoints: Walking the battlements and upper walls gives broad views of the Dniester River and the surrounding valley; the riverfront opposite the fortress is a good photographic vantage point.
• Visitor facilities: The fortress houses a museum and is managed as a historical site with visitor paths, explanatory displays and regular opening hours in the tourist season.
