Bukovina Area

Address: Bukovina region, northern Romania (historic region covering parts of Suceava county)

Bukovina is a historical and cultural region straddling northern Romania and parts of western Ukraine, here referenced to its Romanian portion in Suceava County. The area is notable for its medieval monasteries decorated with extensive exterior frescoes.

A principal draw is the cluster of painted Orthodox monasteries and churches, several dating to the 15th and 16th centuries and notable for unusually well-preserved exterior mural cycles. Rural landscapes, traditional villages and cultural festivals are additional regional highlights.

Historically part of the Principality of Moldavia, Bukovina later came under Habsburg and then Romanian administration, shaping a distinct multiethnic cultural heritage. The painted monasteries were founded by local rulers and monastic communities in the late medieval period.

The Romanian part of Bukovina sits in northern Romania around Suceava County, bordering the Ukrainian region of Chernivtsi to the north, characterised by rolling hills and forested areas.

• UNESCO painted monasteries: Many of the region’s painted monasteries are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are best viewed in daylight when fresco colours and exterior murals are most visible.

• Voroneț Monastery: Voroneț Monastery - a medieval monastic complex famous for its exterior frescoes dominated by intense blue pigments and a richly painted interior cycle dating to the 15th century.
• Sucevița and Moldovița Monasteries: Sucevița and Moldovița monasteries - complexes with extensive exterior and interior mural cycles from the 15th and 16th centuries that are part of the region’s UNESCO-listed painted churches.

Gateway: Romania’s Suceava is the primary gateway to Bukovina - Suceava ‘Ștefan cel Mare’ International Airport (SCV) has seasonal and domestic flights, and national rail (CFR) and intercity buses connect Suceava with Bucharest and other cities.

Local travel: From Suceava, monasteries and towns of Bukovina are reached by regional roads; short drives or regional buses from Suceava typically take from 20 minutes up to around 1-1.5 hours depending on the site (use main regional roads out of Suceava).

• Use Gura Humorului or Suceava as a practical base and drive the painted monasteries circuit so you can visit several sites (Voroneț, Moldovița, Humor, etc.) in one day.
• Start visits early on weekday mornings to beat coach groups and have time to study the exterior frescoes before they become crowded.
• Allow extra time to visit the small on-site museums and parish collections adjacent to the major monasteries-these contain icons and conservation information many day‑trippers miss.
