Khong Island

Khong Island (Don Khong) is the largest island in the Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) archipelago on the Mekong River in Champasak province, southern Laos. It is the primary population and administrative centre for the island group.

The island is characterised by riverside villages, agricultural land and low-density development rather than dense tourism infrastructure. Travellers use the island as a base for short boat trips to neighbouring islands, local markets and simple guesthouses, and for observing Mekong river life and seasonal changes in water level.

The island has long been inhabited as part of the riverine communities of the lower Mekong and has served administrative and transport functions for the Khong District. Its patterns of settlement and economy have remained largely rural and tied to the river.

Khong Island sits in the Mekong River within Champasak province, in the southern part of Laos, among the cluster of islands collectively called Si Phan Don. It lies downstream of the major Mekong rapids and is accessed by boat from river piers serving the archipelago.
