Khone Phapheng Falls is a broad and powerful complex of rapids and cascades on the Mekong River in southern Laos, within Champasak province and the Si Phan Don area. The falls are noted for the large volume of water moved through multiple channels rather than for a single dramatic vertical drop.

The site offers wide river panoramas, accessible viewpoints on islands such as Don Khon and short walks along riverside paths to watch the turbulent channels. Boat trips and close-up river views are common ways to experience the falls and the surrounding islands.

The falls have long been a natural barrier to river navigation, prompting French-colonial-era works such as a short bypass railway on Don Khon to move goods around the rapids. Local communities historically relied on the river for fishing and transport.

Situated in southern Laos near the Cambodian border, the falls lie within the Si Phan Don archipelago in Champasak province where the Mekong spreads into multiple channels and seasonal islands.

Khone Phapheng Falls are on the lower Mekong in Champasak Province near the Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands) area. The falls and nearby viewing points are reached by road from Pakse via local highways to the southern river towns, and then by short boat or landing at riverside points close to the falls; regular tours, buses and private transfers operate from Pakse to the Si Phan Don/Khone Falls area.

• To see Khone Phapheng at its most dramatic, visit in the late rainy season when the Mekong's discharge is highest; for easier island access and boat landings choose the dry season-pick timing based on whether you want maximum flow or easier exploration.
• Base yourself on Don Khon or Don Det to explore the falls on foot-Don Khon offers the best viewpoints and the remains of the French-era narrow-gauge railway that many day visitors miss, and staying overnight avoids the midday tour-bus rush.
