Why Visit Kharagpur?#

A city shaped by learning and railways, Kharagpur attracts visitors for its academic atmosphere and transport history as much as for local life. The sprawling IIT Kharagpur campus and the Hijli area give a sense of intellectual energy, while the famously long railway platform and colonial-era buildings recall the town’s strategic importance. Food stalls and neighbourhood bazaars round out the experience with Bengali snacks and street sweets.

How to Get to Kharagpur#

Kharagpur is easiest to reach by rail: Kharagpur Junction (KGP) is a major railway hub on the Howrah-Chennai line with frequent connections to Kolkata (Howrah). The nearest major airports are Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) and Bhubaneswar’s Biju Patnaik Airport (BBI); from either airport you normally transfer to a train or take a long-distance taxi/bus to reach the town.

By Air

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU): The main international gateway for Kolkata; most visitors to Kharagpur arrive here. From CCU you can take a prepaid airport taxi or app cab to Howrah Station (approximately 45-70 minutes, INR 400-800 depending on traffic) and then a direct train to Kharagpur Junction; Howrah-Kharagpur express trains typically take about 1 hour 50 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes. Alternatively, a direct road transfer from CCU to Kharagpur by taxi or private car takes about 3-4 hours and generally costs around INR 2,000-3,500.

Biju Patnaik Airport, Bhubaneswar (BBI): Bhubaneswar is a secondary option for arrivals from eastern or central India. From BBI, the airport-to-station taxi to Bhubaneswar Railway Station takes about 20-30 minutes (INR 200-400); trains from Bhubaneswar to Kharagpur run several times a day and take roughly 3-4 hours by express service. Road transfers by taxi or bus from Bhubaneswar to Kharagpur take about 3-4 hours and typically cost INR 600-1,500 depending on vehicle type.

By Train & Bus

Train: Kharagpur Junction (KGP) is a major stop on the Howrah-Chennai and Howrah-Puri routes and is served by frequent expresses and passenger trains from Howrah (Howrah Junction, HWH) and Howrah/Sealdah suburban services. Typical express journey times: Howrah-Kharagpur ~1h 50m-2h 30m; Bhubaneswar-Kharagpur ~3-4 hours. Fares vary by class (general/second seating/AC): short intercity fares commonly range from about INR 60 for basic second seating up to a few hundred rupees for AC reserved seats.

Bus: State-run and private long-distance buses connect Kharagpur with Kolkata, Medinipur and neighbouring towns; travel times from Kolkata are generally 3-4 hours depending on traffic. Local town and intercity bus fares are low (often INR 10-150 depending on distance); buses are a budget-friendly option but less predictable in timetable and comfort compared with express trains.

How to Get Around Kharagpur#

Kharagpur is best navigated by rail for intercity travel and by small local modes (autos, cycle rickshaws) for short hops. Trains to Kharagpur Junction are frequent and fast from Kolkata and Bhubaneswar; within town, autos and app cabs are the most practical, while walking covers short distances around the station and campus efficiently.

  • Indian Railways (Kharagpur Junction) (INR 60-350) - Kharagpur Junction is the fastest, most reliable way to get into town from Kolkata and neighbouring cities. Many expresses and some intercity locals stop here; reserved express trains are comfortable for longer journeys and save time over buses. Buy reserved tickets in advance for peak travel; the station is large and well-signposted, but expect crowds at busy times.
  • Intercity & Local Buses (INR 10-150) - State-run and private buses connect Kharagpur with Kolkata, Medinipur and surrounding towns. Buses are cheap and frequent but slower than express trains and subject to traffic delays; choose Volvo or deluxe buses for more comfort on longer runs. For short intra-district hops, town buses are very low-cost but can be crowded and irregular.
  • Taxis / App cabs (Ola, Uber, local taxis) (INR 150-600 (local); INR 2,000-3,500 (intercity)) - App-based taxis operate in Kharagpur and are convenient for door-to-door trips, airport transfers or getting to the IIT campus; fares are higher than autos but comfortable and meter-based. Airport or intercity taxi hires from Kolkata or Bhubaneswar are common for groups and luggage-expect to pay several thousand rupees for a private transfer. Always confirm estimated fare and route in the app or with the driver before starting long intercity trips.
  • Auto-rickshaws (INR 20-150) - Auto-rickshaws are the workhorse for short trips within Kharagpur and around the station-cheap, quick and widely available. Negotiate fares for non-metered rides or insist on the meter; typical short fares are modest but can add up across multiple trips. They’re especially handy when luggage is light and roads are congested.
  • Cycle rickshaws (INR 10-60) - Cycle rickshaws cover very short distances (markets, nearby neighbourhoods, station approaches) and are extremely cheap. They’re slower and not suitable for long distances or heavy luggage, but useful for quick local errands and short last-mile hops. Carry small change and agree a fare before you set off.
  • Walking - Kharagpur’s central areas and the IIT campus are compact and pleasant to explore on foot for short trips-walking is often the quickest way to move between nearby points. Pavements can be uneven in places, so wear sensible shoes and watch for local traffic and cycle rickshaws.
