Khara-Khoto
Ruins Ruined Tangut city and Silk Road archaeological site
Ruins of a Tangut-era desert city in Inner Mongolia; archaeologists and visitors study the archaeological remains and the surrounding Gobi landscape.
Khara-Khoto is the ruined walled city of a medieval Tangut settlement located in western Inner Mongolia, China. It is one of the best-known archaeological sites of the Tangut Western Xia culture.
Established and developed under the Tangut Western Xia polity in the medieval period, the city served as a regional centre until it fell out of use in the later medieval period. Russian expeditions led by explorer Pyotr Kozlov in the early 20th century excavated the site and removed many finds for study.
Khara-Khoto lies in the Gobi Desert region of western Inner Mongolia near the Ejin (Ejina) area, set in arid plains and sand. The ruins are remote and normally visited as part of organized archaeological or desert tours.
Tips for Visiting Khara-Khoto #
- Arrange travel through a local operator based in Ejina/Ejin or the nearest regional center - Khara‑Khoto is remote with unpaved desert roads and is best visited by an experienced 4x4 guide.
- Avoid the peak summer months; spring and autumn offer more stable temperatures and better light for photographing the ruins, while sandstorms and extreme heat are more likely in midsummer.
- Plan to visit around late afternoon for the best low‑angle light on the mud‑brick walls and to allow flexibility for weather and long travel times - bring plenty of time for the return leg and confirm pickup details with your operator.
Best Time to Visit Khara-Khoto #
The best window is late spring through early autumn (June-September) when conditions are warmest and drier for visiting the ruins.
