Khanchali Lake is a highland freshwater lake on the Javakheti volcanic plateau in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia. It forms part of a group of shallow lakes characteristic of this upland region.
The lake and surrounding marshy flats offer open views across reed beds and shallow water, making it a destination for birdwatchers and naturalists. Access is typically by local roads and farm tracks that cross the plateau.
Khanchali is a natural lake shaped by the plateau’s volcanic geology and has been used locally for grazing and seasonal resource use for generations. In recent decades it has been included in regional conservation attention because of its wetland habitats.
The lake lies on the Javakheti Plateau in southern Georgia, within Samtskhe-Javakheti administrative region. It is set in an open, elevated landscape of volcanic fields and steppe-like grassland.
