Khakaborazi National Park
National Park Remote park in Kachin State including Myanmar's highest peaks
Myanmar’s Khakaborazi National Park surrounds the country’s highest peaks, with cloud forest, remote trekking and high‑altitude biodiversity that attract experienced mountaineers and researchers.
Khakaborazi National Park protects the Hkakabo Razi massif and surrounding highland ecosystems in northern Kachin State. It encompasses a large altitudinal range from tropical montane forests up to alpine tundra around Myanmar’s highest mountain.
The park is important for its biological diversity, including montane rainforests, cloud forests and alpine habitats, and for species adapted to high elevations. Scientific expeditions and long-distance treks have visited the area, but there is little in the way of developed tourist infrastructure.
The protected area centres on Hkakabo Razi, which rises to 5,881 metres and marks the border region with China and India in the far north of Myanmar. Its remoteness, rugged terrain and variable weather make it one of the country’s most inaccessible protected landscapes.
Khakaborazi National Park lies in extreme northern Kachin State, adjacent to the international border and forming part of the mountainous transboundary region at the headwaters of major rivers.
- Highest point: The park contains Myanmar's highest mountain, Hkakabo Razi, with an elevation of 5,881 metres.
- Remoteness: Access is extremely remote and difficult; expeditions to the park and peak require lengthy overland travel, local permits and substantial logistical support.
