Kernavė
Castle Archaeological reserve of medieval mounds and settlements
Kernavė’s river valley preserves five hill forts and archaeological remains from medieval and prehistoric periods; visitors hike the mounds, inspect reconstructions and study Lithuania’s early settlement landscape.
Kernavė is an archaeological reserve in central Lithuania known for its series of hillforts, burial mounds and traces of prehistoric and medieval settlement along a river valley. The ensemble preserves visible earthworks and mounds that document long-term occupation and defensive use of the landscape.
Visitors can walk the valleys and hillforts, follow interpretive trails and visit a small museum and visitor centre that presents archaeological finds and the development of the site over time. The setting is a patchwork of wooded slopes, cleared earthworks and river meadows.
The area was occupied from prehistoric times through the medieval era and contains features representing different phases of settlement and fortification. Archaeological research and conservation have focused on preserving earthworks and interpreting the sequence of human activity.
Kernavė sits on the banks of a river valley in the Širvintos/irk connected region of central Lithuania, within a rural landscape and reachable from Vilnius by road in roughly one hour depending on traffic.
- UNESCO status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its layered archaeological landscape that records settlement from prehistory through the medieval period.
