Kerkouane
Archaeological Site Ancient Punic town ruins on Tunisia's coast
Kerkouane on Tunisia’s Cap Bon preserves a Punic coastal town with well-laid streets and remains untouched by later Roman rebuilding; visitors walk ruins and study Punic urban planning.
Kerkouane is an ancient Punic town on Tunisia’s Cap Bon peninsula, notable for being one of the best-preserved examples of a Phoenician-Punic settlement in the central Mediterranean. The site dates primarily to the first millennium BCE and retains visible domestic architecture.
Excavated house foundations, paved streets and domestic installations reveal a planned urban layout with workshops, courtyards and cisterns that reflect Punic domestic and craft life. The ruins lack major Roman overlays, which makes the site especially valuable for understanding Punic urbanism.
Stone foundations, mosaic fragments and remnants of installations are laid out near the coast, and the site offers an uncommon direct look at Punic town planning and household organization. Archaeological interpretation highlights trade links with the wider Mediterranean and local craft production.
Kerkouane was inhabited during the later first millennium BCE and appears to have been abandoned at the end of the Punic era rather than continuously occupied and rebuilt by Roman settlers. This abandonment preserved the Punic urban fabric in situ.
The site lies on the northeastern coast of Tunisia in Nabeul Governorate on the Cap Bon peninsula, set directly on the Gulf of Hammamet and overlooking shallow coastal waters and nearby agricultural land.
- Preservation context: Uniquely preserved because it was abandoned at the end of the Punic period rather than rebuilt by the Romans, providing rare insight into Punic urban life.
