Kerkennah Islands

The Kerkennah Islands are a low-lying archipelago off the east coast of Tunisia near the city of Sfax, in Sfax Governorate. The group is dominated by two main inhabited islands and a number of smaller islets.

Visitors typically find quiet fishing villages, sandy bays, tidal flats and salt-production areas rather than rugged terrain; the islands are used for fishing, small-scale agriculture and local tourism. Beaches, birdlife and traditional local life are the main draws.

The islands have long been inhabited and served as a maritime and fishing base for centuries, with Phoenician and later Roman influence recorded in the region. Their low relief and exposure to wind have shaped local architecture and transport patterns.

Kerkennah sits close offshore from Sfax on Tunisia’s eastern seaboard; the islands are reached by ferry and small boats from the mainland and are part of Sfax Governorate.

What to See #

• Chergui (eastern island): The larger eastern island in the group, more populated and containing the main villages and ferry landings.
• Gharbi (western island): The western island, less populated and linked to the eastern island by shallow channels and local boat services.
