Kerak Castle is a large medieval fortress in southern Jordan built and expanded during the Crusader period and later modified by Muslim rulers. It is one of the most prominent Crusader castles in the region and dominates the town of al-Karak.
Construction began in the 12th century under Crusader control and the castle served as a strategic stronghold on trade and invasion routes. It was besieged and changed hands several times and later received repairs and alterations from Ayyubid and Mamluk authorities.
Perched above the town of al-Karak in south-central Jordan, the castle overlooks surrounding plains and historic routes across the region.

How to Get to Kerak Castle #
Kerak Castle sits in the town of Al‑Karak, south of Amman. By road it is commonly reached from Amman as a drive of around 1.5-2 hours (roughly 120 km depending on route and traffic), with regular intercity buses and service taxis running between Amman and Al‑Karak.
Once in Al‑Karak the castle is on a hill above the town and a short local taxi ride or a walk from the town centre will bring you to the castle entrance; there is parking close to the site.
Tips for Visiting Kerak Castle #
- Visit late afternoon for softer light and cooler temperatures and to watch the castle's walls glow - it's a good time for photos of the fortress silhouette against the valley.
- Descend into Kerak's underground halls and cisterns - the subterranean Crusader passageways and prison areas are among the most atmospheric parts of the site and are easily missed by quick visits.
- Combine Kerak with nearby Shobak Castle along the King's Highway if you have time; both are major Crusader sites on the same route and are commonly paired on day drives.
