Kenroku-en
Garden Historic Japanese garden celebrated for seasonal scenery
Kenroku-en in Kanazawa is a classical Japanese strolling garden noted for ponds, teahouses, sculpted trees, and seasonal plantings; visitors tour well-maintained paths and historic garden structures.
Kenroku-en is a historic strolling garden in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, regarded as one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens and covering roughly 11.4 hectares. Its design combines six classical garden qualities - spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, watercourses and panoramas - to create a formally balanced landscape.
Walkways lead past ponds, streams, teahouses, stone lanterns and sculpted pines; notable sights include the Kotoji-toro stone lantern and the large Kasumigaike Pond. The garden is set up for year-round interest, with seasonal plantings and winter tree-protection ropes that preserve the shape of key trees under snow.
Kenroku-en evolved under the patronage of the Maeda clan beginning in the early Edo period; successive daimyos maintained and expanded the grounds through the 17th to 19th centuries. Later it was opened to the public and is now managed for conservation, cultural heritage and public access.
The garden sits beside Kanazawa Castle Park in central Kanazawa city, a short walk from the castle grounds and the city’s historic district; it is easily reachable from Kanazawa Station.
- Seasonal highlights: Recognized as one of Japan's "Three Great Gardens," it is notable for seasonal displays - plum and cherry blossoms in spring, azaleas in late spring, and vivid autumn colors. Winter features visible tree-protection ropes called yukizuri that are often photographed.
