Kelud Volcano

Kelud (Gunung Kelud) is an active stratovolcano in East Java, Indonesia known for periodic explosive eruptions and for historically having a crater lake. It is one of Java’s more active and closely monitored volcanoes.

The volcano’s eruptions have produced ashfall and pyroclastic activity that affect nearby towns and agriculture, and eruption events have prompted evacuations and road closures. Visitors may approach the volcano when conditions are stable but access is controlled during periods of unrest.

Kelud’s eruptive history includes multiple significant events during the 20th and 21st centuries that shaped local hazard planning and monitoring. The volcano is part of Java’s volcanic arc related to the subduction of the Indo-Australian Plate beneath Eurasia.

Kelud sits inland on Java’s eastern side in East Java province, surrounded by agricultural plains and smaller towns, and is reachable by road from regional centers such as Blitar and Kediri.

Driving distances are approximately 25-35 km from Kediri, about 60-70 km from Malang, and roughly 120-130 km from Surabaya, depending on route. From these cities you follow the main east‑Java regional roads toward Kediri and then local roads up to the villages at the volcano’s base.

There is no regular public transport to the crater rim; visitors normally travel by car or take regional buses to Kediri and then a local taxi/ojek or organized tour to the trailheads or viewpoint areas.
