The Kauman Great Mosque (Masjid Gedhe Kauman) is a historic royal mosque in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, completed in 1773 as the principal mosque of the Yogyakarta Sultanate.
Noted for its multi-tiered Javanese roof and timber construction, the mosque occupies a central position in the Kauman quarter north of the Kraton and remains an active place of worship. Visitors commonly note the layered roof profile and the open verandas that frame the prayer areas.
Commissioned by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I and completed in 1773, the mosque has long served as the main royal mosque for the sultanate and as a center for Islamic education in the city.
It stands immediately north of the Kraton (Sultan’s palace) in central Yogyakarta, within easy walking distance of Malioboro Street and other downtown landmarks.
