Valley Cultural valley containing Kathmandu's historic temples
The Kathmandu Valley contains Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur with Durbar Squares, Hindu and Buddhist temples, bazaars and museums; travellers come for architecture, ritual life and as a gateway to Himalayan treks.
Kathmandu Valley is a bowl-shaped urban and cultural region in central Nepal that contains the cities of Kathmandu, Lalitpur (Patan) and Bhaktapur and a dense concentration of historic temples, palaces and monuments. It is the political, cultural and religious heart of the country.
Major pilgrimage and heritage sites in the valley include large temple complexes and stupas such as Swayambhunath, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath, and three medieval royal squares with palaces and temples in Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur. The valley’s streets and courtyards contain a high density of Newar architecture, stone sculpture and ritual sites.
The valley developed over many centuries as independent city-states and then as a unified political and cultural region, leaving a layered pattern of medieval and later religious monuments.
