Katavi National Park is a remote protected area in western Tanzania established to conserve savanna, floodplain and woodland ecosystems and their wildlife. The park is characterised by large, seasonally flooded plains and networks of lakes and channels that attract dense wildlife concentrations during high-water periods.

Katavi is known for episodic, large aggregations of hippos, buffalo and predators on the floodplains, with viewing opportunities concentrated in the wet and post-wet seasons when animals gather at remaining water. The park’s remoteness means limited lodges and facilities compared with Tanzania’s more visited parks, and much of the park is experienced via game drives and boat or walking safaris in smaller groups.

The park lies in Katavi Region in western Tanzania and is accessed by regional roads and small airstrips; it forms part of Tanzania’s western conservation zone away from the main east-coast tourist circuit.

  • Remoteness and visitation: The park is one of Tanzania's most remote and least-visited major national parks, noted for large seasonal wildlife concentrations rather than year-round tourism infrastructure.
  • Seasonal wildlife: Seasonal floods in the park drive short-term concentrations of hippo, buffalo and predators, making the wet season especially productive for wildlife viewing.

What to See #

  • Katavi floodplains: A seasonally flooded floodplain and central grassland sector where large aggregations of hippos and buffalo gather during high-water months.
  • Seasonal lakes and channels: A network of small lakes and channels that provide year-round water for wildlife and form the focus of most game-viewing activity in the park.

How to Get to Katavi National Park #

Katavi National Park is remote and is usually reached via air to the regional gateway of Mpanda followed by a road transfer into the park. Chartered or scheduled light aircraft fly to Mpanda from larger Tanzanian cities (e.g., Dar es Salaam); from Mpanda the drive into Katavi National Park is by 4x4 and may take a few hours depending on your lodges’ location.

Overland access is possible but involves long drives on rough roads from western Tanzanian towns; many visitors use the air + road transfer option arranged by tour operators or lodges.

Tips for Visiting Katavi National Park #

  • Plan a Katavi trip in the dry season (June-October) when animals concentrate around permanent water and game viewing is at its best; because the park is remote, fly-in safaris to the park's airstrips save many hours of overland travel.
  • Book multi-night stays at a single camp or mobile safari to maximize wildlife encounters-the park's remoteness means travel times are long, so staying put increases your chances of seeing concentrated predator and herbivore action with minimal overlap from other tourists.

Best Time to Visit Katavi National Park #

The dry season (May-October, especially June-September) is the best time to visit Katavi National Park for dependable wildlife viewing and easier access.

Dry season (best for game viewing)
May-October · 15-30°C
Vegetation is thinner and wildlife concentrates around permanent water sources, making sightings easier and roads more passable.
Wet season
November-April · 20-30°C
Heavy rains lead to lush landscapes but can make roads muddy and wildlife harder to locate; some camps may close.
Peak wildlife months
June-September · 15-28°C
