Kasulu Travel Guide
City City in Kigoma, known for agriculture
Kasulu serves as a market town in Kigoma Region, used by travelers for regional trade, bustling weekly markets and as a gateway to forested highlands, lake shores and community-led village visits.
Why Visit Kasulu? #
Located in western Tanzania’s Kigoma Region, this town is known for its lively weekly market and strong agricultural rhythms that draw visitors interested in rural East Africa. Travelers come to experience rice-farming communities, bustling open-air markets selling cassava and dried fish, and local culinary staples such as ugali and nyama choma. Its position also makes it a practical base for exploring nearby hills, forests and lakes and for meeting artisans who practice traditional weaving and woodcarving.
Who's Kasulu For?
Kasulu is a busy trading town near the Burundi border with a large open market and regular transport links. Agricultural commerce and cross‑border trade support local services and modest accommodation options.
Overlanders use Kasulu as a low‑cost stop with very basic guesthouses and minibuses to larger towns. Facilities are simple and English is limited, so carry cash and flexible plans for onward travel.
Surrounding hills and rural farmland offer straightforward walks and village visits. The area favors low‑impact rural experiences rather than established national parks or guided ecotourism.
Local markets sell cassava, plantain and fresh grilled fish; roadside stalls serve hearty Tanzanian staples at very low prices. Don’t expect gourmet dining, but market food is fresh and affordable.

How to Get to Kasulu
Kasulu is reached most conveniently by first getting to Kigoma (the regional hub) or by flying into Dar es Salaam and connecting onward. Kigoma Airport and the Central Line (Kigoma Railway Station) are the main gateways for western Kigoma Region; from there, regional buses and shared minibuses serve Kasulu.
Kigoma Airport (TKQ): Flights from Dar es Salaam and other regional airports land at Kigoma Airport. From the airport you can take a motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) into Kigoma town for about 2,000-6,000 TZS (5-15 minutes) or catch a shared minibus/route taxi toward Kasulu from Kigoma bus terminals; expect the road trip Kigoma→Kasulu to take about 2-3 hours and cost roughly 4,000-10,000 TZS by shared minibus.
Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR): Dar es Salaam is the main international entry point. Most visitors fly Dar→Kigoma on domestic services (flight ~1.5-2 hours; fares vary widely, commonly 200,000-700,000 TZS one-way depending on carrier and season) and then continue by road to Kasulu as above. Overland options from Dar (see Train & Bus) are possible but much slower.
Train: Kigoma is the western terminus of Tanzania’s Central Line (Kigoma Railway Station). Passenger services are infrequent and slow (journeys from Dar es Salaam commonly take more than a day); schedules and classes vary, so check Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) for up-to-date timetables and fares before planning.
Bus: Road is the most reliable way into Kasulu. Regular regional buses and shared minibuses (often called dala-dala or matatu) run from Kigoma town and other regional hubs to Kasulu; the bus leg Kigoma→Kasulu typically takes about 2-3 hours and fares are commonly in the 4,000-10,000 TZS range for shared minibuses. From larger cities like Dar es Salaam or Mwanza expect long-distance coach services to Kigoma (overnight) followed by a local connection to Kasulu.
How to Get Around Kasulu
Getting around Kasulu and the surrounding Kigoma Region is primarily by road: shared minibuses and regional coaches connect towns while boda-bodas and taxis cover short trips. For most visitors, the best approach is to reach Kigoma by air or long-distance coach and then take a local minibus to Kasulu; within town, walking and motorcycle taxis are the quickest options.
- Regional bus / shared minibus (4,000-10,000 TZS) - Shared minibuses (dala-dala/matatu) are the backbone of inter-town travel in Kigoma Region and the most common way to reach Kasulu from Kigoma and neighbouring towns. Services are frequent from Kigoma bus station; expect 2-3 hour trips from Kigoma to Kasulu depending on stops and road conditions. Tickets are inexpensive (roughly 4,000-10,000 TZS) but vehicles can be crowded-travel light and keep valuables close.
- Long-distance coach (20,000-60,000 TZS (varies by route)) - Long-distance coaches link Dar es Salaam, Mwanza and other regional centres with Kigoma; these are a slower but cheaper alternative to flying. Coaches are usually overnight on the longest legs and drop passengers at Kigoma bus station where you switch to a local minibus to Kasulu. Book through established companies where possible and allow extra time for connections-the journey can be a full day or more.
- Taxi (2,000-10,000 TZS (inner town)) - Taxis are available in Kigoma town for short trips and airport transfer; short fares into town are modest, but hiring a taxi for the long haul to Kasulu is uncommon and will be expensive. Use metered taxis where available or agree a price in advance; expect short inner-town trips to cost a few thousand TZS. Taxis are convenient if you have heavy luggage or arrive late.
- Motorcycle taxi (bodaboda) (1,000-4,000 TZS) - Bodaboda are ubiquitous for short hops and reaching places off the main road. They're cheap and fast for single passengers (typically 1,000-4,000 TZS for short rides) but less comfortable with luggage. Helmets aren't always provided-insist on one if possible-and negotiate the fare before you ride.
- Private car / 4x4 hire (Negotiable (depend on provider)) - Hiring a car or 4x4 lets you explore surrounding rural areas at your own pace and is useful if you're traveling in a group or carrying equipment. Prices vary widely by provider and season; expect to pay significantly more than public transport but gain flexibility for early starts and remote destinations. Ensure the vehicle is suitable for unpaved roads and agree fuel and insurance terms up front.
- Walking - Kasulu town centre is compact and walkable for short errands, markets and restaurants; walking is the best way to explore the market area and neighbourhoods at a relaxed pace. Sidewalks and lighting can be limited in places-stay aware of traffic and avoid poorly lit areas at night.

Nightlife in Kasulu #
Kasulu is a regional market town with limited nighttime entertainment: expect bars attached to lodges, local food stalls and community gatherings. There’s no developed club scene - evenings are low-key and centered on social dining. If you need a livelier night, plan for Kigoma or larger Tanzanian cities. Practical tips: bring a torch for walking after dark, use trusted local transport, and keep valuables secure.
