Kasubi Tombs
Monument Royal Buganda tomb complex and cultural burial site
On Kampala’s northern edge, Kasubi Tombs hold the royal burial grounds of Buganda kings; a UNESCO site noted for large thatched palaces built from local materials. Visitors come for Buganda history, traditional architecture and cultural ceremonies.
Kasubi Tombs are a royal burial ground on Kasubi Hill in Kampala and a cultural shrine of the Buganda Kingdom. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001 for its outstanding example of traditional architecture and cultural practices.
The complex comprises a group of traditional thatched buildings centred on the main tomb structure that houses the remains and relics of several Buganda kings. Visitors can see the distinctive conical thatch architecture, clan shrines and displays explaining royal customs and the site’s cultural significance.
The site dates to the late 19th and early 20th centuries as the burial place for successive Kabakas (Buganda kings) and developed into a central cultural and spiritual site for the kingdom. A major fire in March 2010 destroyed much of the main structures; conservation and reconstruction work has been carried out since to restore the traditional building forms.

- UNESCO and restoration status: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2001, the complex suffered a major fire in March 2010 and has been the focus of restoration efforts since then.
