The Kashmir Valley is a broad valley in the western Himalaya within the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, famed for its lakes, rivers and mountain scenery. It is a densely settled and agriculturally productive valley that contains the city of Srinagar and several major hill resorts.

The valley’s primary attractions include Srinagar with its Dal Lake and traditional houseboats, the alpine meadows and ski areas at Gulmarg, and the river-valley scenery around Pahalgam and Sonamarg. Activities range from boating and garden visits to trekking, skiing and seasonal flower displays.

Cultural and craft traditions are visible in local bazaars, houseboat life, Kashmiri shawls and local cuisine, and short drives outside towns reveal saffron fields, apple orchards and small village settlements. Mountain excursions provide access to high-altitude lakes and passes on the valley’s margins.

The valley has been the seat of regional kingdoms and dynasties for centuries and was an important centre under Mughal rule and later regional rulers. In 1947 the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir became a contested territory between India and Pakistan, an issue that has shaped the region’s modern political history.

The valley lies in northern India between the Pir Panjal Range to the south-west and the Great Himalayan and Zanskar ranges to the north and east. Srinagar is the valley’s main city and transport hub.

  • Best seasons: Spring and summer are best for gardens, houseboats and trekking while winter is the main season for skiing and snow sports in resorts such as Gulmarg.
  • Local produce: Saffron cultivation around Pampore and apple orchards are important local agricultural products visible from short drives outside urban centres.
