How to Get to Kasangati
Kasangati is a town just north of Kampala in Uganda's Central Region; most visitors arrive via Entebbe International Airport (EBB) and then travel by road through Kampala. There are no regular passenger train services to Kasangati, so road options (matatus, taxis, boda-bodas) are the practical ways to reach the town.
Entebbe International Airport (EBB): Entebbe is the main international gateway for Kampala and the surrounding Central Region; it’s about 35-45 km from Kasangati. Shared shuttle minibuses and public minibuses (matatus) run from the airport toward Kampala and typically cost around UGX 5,000-10,000 (≈USD 1.5-3) and take 45-60 minutes to Kampala city centre depending on traffic. Taxis or private transfers from the airport to Kampala cost roughly UGX 80,000-120,000 (≈USD 22-33) and take 35-60 minutes; from Kampala you can continue north to Kasangati by boda-boda, matatu or taxi (see Bus section).
Kajjansi Airfield (no scheduled commercial service): Kajjansi is a small airfield used mainly for charter flights and flight schools rather than scheduled airline services. If you arrive here on a private or charter flight you will need to arrange a private transfer or taxi into Kampala (about 20-30 minutes) and then onward transport to Kasangati; expect transfer taxi costs similar to short private transfers within the Kampala metro.
Train: There is currently no regular passenger rail service serving Kasangati; Uganda Railways has focused on freight and limited test services in recent years. Trains are not a practical option for getting to Kasangati, so rely on road transport instead.
Bus / Matatu / Minibus: Kasangati is best reached by matatu (shared minibus) or local bus from Kampala. Matatus and minibuses run from Kampala’s northern suburbs (areas around Kalerwe, Kamwokya and along Gayaza Road) toward Kasangati; a typical fare from central Kampala or Kalerwe is roughly UGX 1,500-3,000 (≈USD 0.40-0.80) and the ride takes about 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. For more comfort or direct trips, boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) and private taxis operate widely; boda fares for short hops are usually UGX 1,500-5,000 and taxis or ride-hail transfers from Kampala to Kasangati are commonly UGX 10,000-40,000.
How to Get Around Kasangati
Kasangati is best navigated by road: matatus for the cheapest travel, boda-bodas for quick short hops, and taxis or app services for comfort and luggage. Walking works well for short local trips, but for most arrivals from Entebbe or central Kampala you'll use a combination of taxi/matatu and boda-boda depending on budget and luggage.
- Matatu / Minibus (UGX 1,500-3,000) - Shared minibuses (matatus) are the cheapest way to get around Kasangati and to/from Kampala. They run frequently on routes along Gayaza Road and from northern Kampala hubs like Kalerwe and Kamwokya; expect crowded conditions at peak times and bring small change. Fares are short-distance and local-typically UGX 1,500-3,000-and they're the most budget-friendly option.
- Boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) (UGX 1,500-5,000) - Boda-bodas are everywhere and the quickest way to get around Kasangati for short trips or to reach matatu stops. Negotiate or ask for the meter/typical price before you go; wear a helmet when provided and be cautious in heavy rain. Short rides within the town commonly cost UGX 1,500-5,000 depending on distance.
- Taxi / Ride-hail (Bolt, SafeBoda) (UGX 10,000-40,000) - Bolt and app-based services like SafeBoda operate in the Kampala metro and can be used to reach Kasangati from the city centre with more comfort and reliability than shared minibuses. Prices are higher than matatus but give door-to-door service and easier luggage handling; expect fares from central Kampala to Kasangati in the range UGX 10,000-40,000 depending on vehicle type and demand. Use official apps or licensed taxis and confirm fare estimates in-app.
- Private car hire / self-drive (UGX 200,000-400,000 per day (typical driver-hire ranges)) - Hiring a car with a driver is convenient if you want flexibility to explore the Central Region beyond Kasangati or are traveling with luggage. Roads around Kampala can be slow during peak hours, so leave extra time. Daily rates for a driver-hire vary widely-budget accordingly and confirm fuel policy and insurance with the provider.
- Intercity bus / Coach (Varies by route) - Longer-distance coaches that pass through or near Kampala won't stop in Kasangati itself, but you can take a coach to Kampala's main terminals and transfer to a local matatu north toward Kasangati. Coaches offer more comfort for long legs (for example from Entebbe or other cities) but require a final road transfer. Timetables and prices vary by operator-buy tickets in advance when possible.
- Walking - Kasangati is compact enough that walking is practical for short distances around town, markets and local shops. Footpaths can be uneven and shade is limited, so bring water and sun protection, and avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas. Walking is free and often the fastest option for very local errands.
