Karlskirche is a Baroque church on Karlsplatz in central Vienna, Austria, commissioned by Emperor Charles VI and built in gratitude for the end of a plague in the early 18th century. The church is a major example of Austrian Baroque architecture and a prominent feature on Vienna’s ring road area.
Architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach designed the building; construction began in 1716 and the church was completed in 1737 under the supervision of his son. The façade features a large central dome, a classical portico and two flanking columns modeled on Roman triumphal columns, with rich Baroque interior decoration.
Karlskirche stands on Karlsplatz adjacent to the Ringstrasse tram and near the Vienna Concert Hall and the Vienna University campus, within walking distance of the city centre and the main railway stations.

How to Get to Karlskirche #
Karlskirche (Karlskirche) stands on Karlsplatz in central Vienna on the Ringstraße. The fastest public‑transit access is Vienna U‑Bahn lines U1, U2 and U4 to Karlsplatz station - from the station it is a 1-2 minute walk to the church. Several tram lines run around the Ringstraße and stop at Karlsplatz as well.
By car it is in the city centre (Innere Stadt/Ringstraße); driving distances from other central Vienna points are short and walking from nearby central locations is straightforward.
Tips for Visiting Karlskirche #
- Arrive early (right at opening) to see the interior and the high altar with far fewer visitors and to secure a spot if you want to use the dome lift - the internal elevator gives a close-up view of the dome frescoes that many miss.
- Buy the combined entry that includes the dome lift; the short lift/climb to the base of the cupola is the best way to inspect the frescoes and takes only a few minutes but is ticketed separately from general church entry.
- If you want music, check the church's schedule for midday or evening concerts (they're often advertised locally); attending one provides a memorable acoustic experience in the baroque interior.
